Objectives
The meeting will offer participants an opportunity to learn
more about effective, system-wide approaches to:
- building a sound, statewide infrastructure to help persons
with developmental disabilities gain access to high quality health prevention,
wellness and treatment services;
- improving access to high quality dental services for persons
with lifelong disabilities;
- using state-of-the art methods to assess health risks, develop
effect risk management strategies and measure the effectiveness of health
interventions for person with developmental disabilities;
- establishing closer working relationships between community
DD long-term service systems and health care delivery networks;
- improving medication management practices, including the
use of better techniques to track drug utilization and promptly modifying
prescriptions and dosage levels where necessary; and
- improving the dissemination of information on state-of-the-art
treatment practices.

Deborah Spitalnik, Ph.D.,
director of the Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities at the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The former chair of the Presidents
Committee on Mental Retardation, Dr. Spitalnik is a pioneer in integrating
adults with disabilities into managed health care systems through care coordination.
Sheryl White-Scott, MD, director of the St. Charles
Developmental Disabilities Program at St. Vincents Catholic Medical
Centers of New York. A leader in organizing clinical services for adults
with developmental disabilities in indigenous urban communities, Dr. White-Scott
is a nationally recognized expert on the delivering health services to women
and minorities with developmental disabilities.
Paul Glassman, DDS, professor of dental practice and
community services at the University of the Pacifics School of Dentistry
and the President of Special Care in Dentistry, a national organization
dedicated to improving the oral health of people with special needs. In
addition to his other duties, Dr. Glassman directs an innovative program
to improve community dental services for persons with developmental disabilities
in northern California.

Series
The 2004 NASDDDS Annual Meeting is the second
of a two-part series of meetings the Association will be holding in
2004 that focus on Building community capacity to support people with
multiple and complex needs, one of NASDDDS' five strategic system change
goals and will look at ways that state/local DD service systems are
working to improve community access to high quality health and dental
services, and in particular, how states are providing supports to individuals
with the most medically complex needs.
