Keynote
Speaker
Ruth Ryan, MD
Dr. Ryan is the distinguished author of the Handbook of Mental
Health Care for Persons with Developmental Disabilities, a step-by-step
guide to "transdisciplinary, whole person assessment and treatment;"
and former director and cofounder of The Community Circle, an innovative
Denver nonprofit research and education foundation that provides mental
health and behavioral services to adults with mental retardation and developmental
disabilities (MR/DD).
She will share her experiences with the core issues facing
MR/DD service systems such as the integration between MR/DD and mental health
services; critical effects of the structure, content, and degree of an individual's
control on services; and need for staff training and support to meet the
unique needs of people with behavioral challenges.
Dr. Ryan will give meeting attendees practical advice on the
characteristics of programs and services that achieve positive outcomes

Meeting
Series
The Mid-Year Meeting is the first of a two-part
series of meetings the Association will be holding in 2004 that focus
on Building community capacity to support people with multiple and complex
needs, one of NASDDDS' five strategic system change goals. The Annual
Meeting (November 17-19, Alexandria, Virginia) will look at ways that
state/local DD service systems are working to improve community access
to high quality health and dental services, and in particular, how states
are providing supports to individuals with the most medically complex
needs.
