HSRI

The Human Services Research Institute (HSRI) was established in 1976 with the express purpose of assisting states and the federal government to enhance services and supports to people with mental illness and people with mental retardation, and to support the development of alternatives to congregate care facilities.

NCI

National Core Indicators. In January 1997, the Association, in partnership with the Human Services Research Institute (HSRI), a nonprofit policy research firm based in Cambridge Massachusetts, launched the Core Indicators Project. The name of the activity was changed in 2002 to National Core Indicators (NCI) program in order to better reflect the ongoing status of this interstate initiative.

QualityMall

The Quality Mall, a place where you can find lots of free information about person-centered supports for people with developmental disabilities. Each of the Mall stores has departments you can look through to learn about positive practices that help people with developmental disabilities live, work and participate in our communities and improve the quality of their supports.

UMN/ICI

The mission of the Institute on Community Integration is to improve the community services and social supports available to individuals with developmental disabilities, and their families, throughout the United States and abroad.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's National Program on Self-Determination for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (SDPDD) provides funds to 19 states to carry out self-determination activities. The program office is part of the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire. The office makes available financial resources, technical assistance, and training support in self-determination. Several monographs, a video, an introduction to self-determination, and a National Public Radio broadcast are available.

DDMED

The DDMED website is provided by the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. Healthcare information is provided for the professional or the family caregiver. The DDMED consultative program provides a roadmap to healthcare professionals who manage persons with intellectual disability and other health problems such as mental illness or neurological disorders.

The NASMHPD Research Institute, Inc. (NRI) studies Issues in the delivery of public mental health services supported by state mental health agencies. The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) is a bipartisan organization dedicated to serving the lawmakers and staffs of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths, and territories. The Conference is a source for research, publications, consulting services, meetings, and seminars. It is the national conduit for lawmakers to communicate with one another and share ideas. ADD

The Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD) grants support programs that protect the rights and promote the self-sufficiency of Americans with developmental disabilities and their families. Funds help state governments, local communities, and the private sector to integrate these people socially and economically into mainstream society.

CMS

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) administers the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which provide health care to about one in every four Americans. Medicare provides health insurance for more than 39 million elderly and disabled Americans. Medicaid, a joint federal-state program, provides health coverage for more than 34 million low-income persons, including nearly 18 million children and nursing home coverage for low-income elderly.

The “Technical Assistance Database” will allow you to see the wide range of activities that support and enrich the grantees under the New Freedom Initiative. Plain Language

This Web site is maintained by the Plain Language Action & Information Network, a government-wide group of volunteers working to improve communications from the federal government to the public. The site contains lots of resources to help writers achieve the goal of clear communication and to make it possible for people to understand what is written the first time they read it, especially materials that tell people how to obtain benefits or comply with requirements. Reports and Reviews

This report documents the first step in a collaborative dialogue between state mental health and developmental disabilities agencies and multiple stakeholders in the states to assess the successes and failures of current practice in serving people with co-occurring conditions in an effort to develop a productive partnership for systems change. The report identifies barriers to services in existing service systems, describes components of an "ideal" system of care, and makes recommendations for systems change.

This article describes one method to evaluate community- based services that can be used by state and local governments to assess their service delivery system. The process used in the state of Connecticut and the new initiatives now taking place there will also be described as an example of an attempt to overcome obstacles and seek positive, long-term remedies to meet the challenge of providing effective services for people with mental retardation and behavioral health needs.
